How To Take The Perfect #OOTD Photo
By Sola Onitiri
You can't scroll through Instagram without bumping into an epic #ootd picture. With exotic backgrounds and perfectly crafted outfits, influencers and models make #ootd shots seem like a walk through a perfectly sun drenched park. But if you've ever tried to snap a picture of an outfit that you're really impressed with, you know that it's not as easy as it looks.
Whether your an established blogger, budding influencer, or a bad ass boss babe who's just looking to add some spice to their feed - chances are you need to be posting something that ends with the hashtag ootd. These pictures give your followers a small taste about your lifestyle and your personality - plus it never hurts to exude some confidence via social media.
As a street style and fashion photographer, I've taken thousands of #ootd shots so I compiled a few of my favorite tips to help you get the best shot AND IG likes.
Find Someone To Execute Your Vision
Finding the person that will help you execute your vision is a MAJOR key. No shade to the Instagram Husbands of the world, but a photographer can help you achieve some of the tips I've mentioned below. In addition to all of the tips and tricks I'm about to cover, your photographer will also be a much needed second pair of eyes. So if you have lipstick in your teeth or need to switch up a pose, a good photographer will be able to identify those issues and get your shoot back on track. This allows you to get several great shots in no time. So let's get to the nitty gritty.
What Do I Do With My Hands?
Ah, the classic question. I guarantee you, the biggest thing you'll have to overcome when your photographer starts snapping is where to put your arms and generally how "posey" you should get. It's the hardest part of modeling (That and where to put your chin). So here's what you can do with your arms. Depending on the look you're trying to give off, consider crossing your arms, putting your hands in your pockets, or throwing them up in the air like you just don't care. You might feel uncomfortable at first, but the picture will turn out perfect. And if it all fails - grab a prop.
KEEP IT MOVING
Kinetic energy gives your photo the extra snap that you need to get those Insta likes. Movement is key and a great way to seem more casual. Have your photographer capture you walking, dancing, taking a sip of coffee, or heading to brunch. This is the best way to incorporate more of a lifestyle angle to your brand as well.
Photogenic Layers
Now we get to the fun part. Let's. Talk. Clothes. An #ootd post isn't complete without a banging outfit. It's no secret that I'm not a huge fan of minimalism - but even if you sway that way, I would encourage you to find layers that will grab the eye. Here's the formula I typically use when styling bloggers and models. Contrast plus texture divided by an outer layer equals dimension. Take Priyanka from Paint The Town Chic. She's contrasting a dark textured dress with a purple printed shirt. And this look wouldn't be complete without the ever so chic (and perfectly draped) camel coat. Plan to have pieces that look good together and can work as stand alones so you get more look for your buck.
With a little work and the right team you can be snagging followers left and right!

Does dressing well make you feel better during this, the worse three months of the freaking year. Spoiler: the answer is yes. But not for the reasons you think.
