How To Prep Your Closet For The Most Romantic Spring Ever
By Sola Onitiri
Despite it being "Spring" (please image those as air quotes) everyone here on the East Coast are still clutching onto our winter clothes like we're Rose and there's no room on the door for Jack. But folks, I swear, Spring is coming and I want you to get ready for dreamy ruffles, vibrant stripes, and the "perfect date" light jackets. Before you know it, the erratic snow storms will end and you will start to bloom like the fierce flower you are. So let's do a little prep work so you can have the picturesque Spring that you deserve.
Find Your Spring Time Aesthetic
Before you take a trip, you need to know where you're going and how you're going to get there. Shopping's the same way. Having an idea of what you want to look like is going to come in handy. In fact, the number one cause of having ons of clothes but nothing to wear, is willy nilly shopping with no plan in mind. When you shop, think about several full outfits so you'll always be able to mix and match. Don't be afraid of hopping on Instagram for a little inspo. But remember to do you.
Create Your own Style Guide
Fact: Shopping is not for everyone. Fact Part 2: That shouldn't hold you back from looking iconic. Even if shopping is your jam or you can't wait to make enough money to employee a stylist, you should always shop smarter not harder. Instead of suffering through racks on racks on racks of clothes that may not fit your aesthetic, head to at least three of you favorite online stores and start saving or screenshoting your favorite looks. Simply click on what you truly like and worry about the dollar signs later. Here’s what so awesome about this method. You get to familiarize yourself with the latest trends and shop from the comfort of your own home at your own pace.
This list of saved items will act as your Spring/Summer Style Guide, so make sure it adds up to your “look”. If buying things online gives you anxiety, bring your guide with you on your next shopping trip and ask a sales associate if they have anything like your photo.
2018 Fashion Trends
Now it's time for the good stuff. We covered bring the runway to your closet at the beginning of the year but let's go over a few details. First of which are details. This spring, pay attention to the small things that make an outfit great. Embellishment on the hems of jeans, plastic/vinyl detailing on T-shirts, and fringe on pants. This spring 2018 is also going to be vibrant with a capital 'V'. Saturated monochromatic looks were all the rage on the runway and will be on the streets as well. Swap your "ground breaking" florals for stripes. And don't be afraid to mix and match them with patterns. Silhouettes this spring are swopping, off the shoulder, romantic numbers that promote movement. Think about the kind o dresses you'd re-read Pride and Prejudice in or salsa dance on a steamy second date.
Be Fearless
After the winter, It's so easy to want to tip all of your clothes in a garbage can and set it on fire. I'm right there with you - sometimes my wardrobe makes me want to pull my hair out. But remember, fashion is supposed to be fun! It's supposed to make you feel confident and fearless. So find or keep the items that make you feel like an icon.
